“Cheyenne Dog Men Society are an important part of the Cheyenne tribe. Regarded as highly aggressive and effective Warriors.
Council Chiefs were responsible for the tribe as a whole and the headsmen of the Military Societies were to maintain discipline within the tribe.
The most elite Dog Soldiers wore large feathered headdresses. Several chosen from the society wore “ dog ropes” that were made from hide usually 20 feet to 12 feet long.
During battle the Dog Soldier would stake his “dog rope“ to the ground - out in plain sight - serving as a human decoy , giving woman, children and elders a better chance to hide from the enemy.
He would fight from that location through the end of battle . He could not leave until the battle was over and a fellow soldier had unpinned his sash.
This headdress is all hand sewn with sinew. The cap is made of elk hide and vintage army blanket. Hand beaded with glass beads with the front adorned with brass round spots.
Feathers have been painstakingly straightened, wrapped with aged cloth and individually sewn on with sinew. The white on the black feathers are pieces of ermine hide. Side drops are four full ermine hides with aged cloth.
* In the back of headdress you will find a worn piece of white and red cloth from a vintage very worn flag. Many time’s different tribes would upset pieces of the Army flags obtained in battle. Some believed by having this “flag medicine“ it would give them the same powers as it gave the enemy.
White side of flag cloth = The Enemy
The two brass beads = gun shells
The larger round brass bead = Cannon Balls
Red side of cloth = Red Stains on the land
Beaded arrowheads fighting against the enemy
Inside the buckskin pouch = Wolf hair, sweetgrass and sage
This headdress is made in respect to all of the warriors of all tribes- from yesterday- to today - and a deep hearted strong prayer for our future Warriors “Our Children””
